This spectacular edition was limited to only 460 numbered copies of which this is number 38. Illustrated with 17 full page lithographs by Ethel Gabain. Folio (11" x 15"). Text in English. Spectacularly bound in full tri-gilt ruled, straight grain morocco. Tri-gilt ruled spine compartments. Gilt ruled raised bands. Gilt titles. Extremely elaborate gilt tooled turn-ins with brown moire insets. Marbled endsheets. t.e.g. This highly prized edition of Bronte's classic was originally commissioned by a prominent French collector. Most desirable were the 17 lithographs by the English artist Ethel Gabain (1883-1950). One of the few women of her generation to be able to make a living as a lithographer, Gabain and her husband, the well-known English print maker John Copley, lived for some years in Italy where both were inspired to do some of their finest work- With this edition of Jane Eyre renowned to be her most illustrious. Fluid and beautifully executed, Gabain's lithographs have a distinctive cachet which lend themselves most perfectly to Bronte's exquisite and evocative prose. Truly a most inspiring production. List of illustrations inserted loose at front. The most insignificant of occasional rubbing to covers. A patch or two of occasional textual offset. A fine, bright, exquisitely crisp copy.
